What Preqin Is and How It Works

Preqin is a data provider for the alternative assets industry, founded in 2003. Its flagship product, Preqin Pro, is an alternative assets data platform. Per Preqin, clients rely on its database for due diligence, performance benchmarking, market research and finding investment opportunities. Preqin says it covers private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, private debt, real estate, infrastructure, natural resources and secondaries, and that more than 200,000 professionals use it.

BlackRock completed its Preqin acquisition on March 3, 2025, after agreeing to pay 2.55 billion pounds, about $3.2 billion in cash. The deal announcement said founder Mark O'Hare would join BlackRock as a Vice Chair after the close, and the completion release said Preqin would remain available as a standalone solution. BlackRock's Preqin page lists 4,400 clients and 220,000 users.

In August 2025 Preqin released Business Development Dashboard 2.0 in Preqin Pro, which shows fund manager data, contact updates and upcoming fund launches and helps users time their outreach. In May 2026 BlackRock Aladdin announced new private credit capabilities on Preqin, and in July 2026 it expanded Preqin Benchmarks and Indices, with closed-end indices covering more than 10,000 funds and more than $13 trillion.

Preqin Pricing in 2026

Published prices: none found. As of October 2026, Active Family Offices could not find prices on preqin.com, and TrustRadius tells buyers to contact Preqin's sales team. Preqin's own site routes Preqin Pro through "Book a demo". Its AWS Marketplace data listing also asks buyers to submit a subscription request for a tailored quote.

Third-party estimates (not confirmed by Preqin):

Tier (as named by Costbench)Estimated priceBilling
Preqin Pro (Single Asset Class)About $2,100Per year
Preqin Pro (Multi-Asset)About $4,200 a monthBilled annually
Preqin EnterpriseAbout $6,700 a monthBilled annually
Preqin Data Solutions (API and feeds)No price listedCustom pricing on request, per Costbench

Treat Costbench's numbers as unverified: its summary says $2.1K to $6.7K per year, yet its tier list prices two plans per month, and its page says "Last verified: August 3, 2026" while dating the prices "as of September 2026". Active Family Offices (October 2026) reports third-party guides at roughly $15,000 to $81,000 a year, depending on modules and seats. Neither is a Preqin price list; confirm any figure with Preqin.

Free access: Preqin offers a free account for industry reports, publications and statistics. On preqin.com that sits under Insights, while Preqin Pro points to "Book a demo". Costbench lists no free tier.

For comparison, Round Funded publishes its prices (October 2026): Round+ at $99/month, Round Pro at $249/month, Lifetime at $899 one-time.

What Preqin Does Well

  • Market sizing. One TrustRadius reviewer says Preqin "does a great job in sizing the private markets and tracking their growth over time."
  • Fund performance benchmarking. The same reviewer, who benchmarks private equity and debt funds against peers, lists fund performance benchmarking and sourcing fund performance data as a pro.
  • Breadth across alternatives. Preqin says it covers eight alternative asset classes, from private equity and hedge funds to real estate and secondaries. Round Funded offers no LP data, fund performance data, valuation estimates or company financials, so for that job Preqin wins outright.

Where Reviewers Say Preqin Falls Short

  • Stale data. The TrustRadius reviewer says some fund performance information in the dataset is stale. A G2 reviewer in July 2026 used Preqin Pro to profile and target investors for fundraising and found it "stale and outdated" next to newer tools.
  • Benchmarking gaps. The TrustRadius reviewer says benchmarks lack the 5th and 95th percentiles (only 25th, median and 75th) and that there is no way to calculate 1, 3 or 5 year performance.
  • Contact quality. A May 2023 G2 reviewer said contact emails "usually bounce."
  • Sales experience. The July 2026 G2 reviewer called the commercial team unhelpful.
  • Thin review base. G2 shows 2.7/5 from 3 reviews; TrustRadius shows 7.7/10 from 10 reviews. Both samples are small, and each point here rests on one or two reviewers.
  • Analysis depth. A Reddit poster found Preqin "fine for fund and LP coverage" but thin for analyzing allocations or comparing managers.

PitchBook

A Reddit poster who has used both tools calls PitchBook "okay on deal coverage" but says it doesn't "really connect investor, fund, and underlying assets." See our PitchBook comparison.

Cobalt by Hamilton Lane and SPI by StepStone

The same poster demoed both while looking for fund, deal and asset-level performance data, not just headline IRR. Due diligence data and coverage had them leaning toward Cobalt, and they were still asking users for opinions.

SWFI (Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute)

A Reddit commenter critical of Preqin, in an older thread, says their firm uses SWFI and calls it "amazing for investor contacts and investor profiles."

Who Should Use Preqin

  • Use Preqin if you raise a fund from LPs, benchmark fund performance against peers, or allocate across alternative asset classes and can justify an annual contract.
  • Look elsewhere if you are a founder raising a seed or Series A: an institutional alternative-assets terminal is rarely what that round needs. You need active VCs and angels, a way to reach them and a pipeline, which is what Round Funded's investor database is for.
  • Compare first if you are still choosing an investor database: see our best investor database tools for founders in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Preqin cost per year?

No published Preqin price turned up in the pages we reviewed (October 2026). Active Family Offices reports third-party guides at roughly $15,000 to $81,000 a year, depending on modules and seats. Costbench's lower estimates, from about $2,100 a year, are internally inconsistent. All are estimates, not Preqin prices.

Does Preqin have a free plan or free trial?

Preqin offers a free account for research reports, publications and statistics. Preqin Pro access starts with "Book a demo", Costbench lists no free tier, and no Preqin Pro trial turned up in the pages we reviewed. Founders who want something free can try Round Funded's Find Investors tool, which returns free investor matches.

Is Preqin legit, and is it worth it?

Yes, it is an established business: founded in 2003, owned by BlackRock since March 2025. Whether it is worth it depends on the job. TrustRadius shows 7.7/10 from 10 reviews, with one reviewer praising market sizing and fund benchmarking. For startup fundraising, a July 2026 G2 reviewer found it stale for investor targeting; G2 shows 2.7/5 from just 3 reviews.

What is Preqin used for?

Per Preqin, clients use its database for due diligence, performance benchmarking, market research and finding investment opportunities. TrustRadius describes its tools as helping fund managers and allocators make investment decisions.

Preqin vs PitchBook: which is better?

The only head-to-head view in the pages we reviewed is one Reddit poster's, who said both "hit a ceiling in terms of depth": Preqin is fine for fund and LP coverage but thin on analyzing allocations, while PitchBook is okay on deal coverage but does not connect investor, fund and underlying assets.

What are the best Preqin alternatives and competitors?

For institutional work, Reddit posters name PitchBook, Cobalt by Hamilton Lane, SPI by StepStone and SWFI. G2's list (Vena, LiveFlow, Celonis, Datarails and Causal) comes from its Financial Analysis Software category, a different job from private markets data. For startup founders raising from VCs and angels, Round Funded is the alternative built for that round.

Is Round Funded affiliated with Preqin?

No. Round Funded is not affiliated with Preqin or BlackRock. This page is an independent comparison built from Preqin's public pages and published third-party sources, with facts as of October 2026.

Final Word

Preqin is a serious tool for fund managers and allocators, and nothing on Round Funded replaces its fund benchmarks. A founder raising a round needs active investors and a way to reach them, at a price they can see.
