What Is Signal NFX, and Is It Free?
Signal by NFX (signal.nfx.com) is a free investor search and investing network built by the venture firm NFX, which says it will never charge for it. It suits building a first long list and mapping warm intros through Gmail. Round Funded is the alternative when you also need to email investors and track them in a pipeline.
Short verdict: use it, it costs nothing. The limits are recency and outreach, covered below.
This page is about Signal by NFX, not the Signal messenger app.

What Signal by NFX Is and How It Works
Signal calls itself "the Investing Network for Founders, VCs, Scouts, and Angels." Per its FAQ, it does three jobs for founders: it identifies investors that may fit your startup, based on sector, stage and quality of investor; uncovers the investor contacts you already have; and tracks your fundraising process.
The homepage organizes investor lists by stage (Pre-Seed, Seed, Series A, Series B), by sector such as E-commerce, Education, EnergyTech and Enterprise Applications, and by region, from New York City and Israel to MENA and Africa. Articuler reports that on the Top SaaS Seed Investors list each investor has a firm, a title, a "sweet spot" figure and a range.
The warm-intro feature is the Gmail connection. Sign in with Gmail and Signal shows intro paths to investors. Per the FAQ, as summarized by Articuler, Signal reads only header metadata (sender, receiver, date), not email content.
The data is community-built. Articuler cites the FAQ figure of "over 1 million edits" over 30 months, and Signal says listed investors are vetted by founders and other investors.
Signal by NFX Pricing in 2026
There is nothing to buy. Per Signal by NFX's FAQ, "Signal is a 100% free tool from NFX, and we will never charge for it."
Third-party sources agree. A May 2026 comparison on Causo lists Signal as "Free, no paid tier," and an October 2026 roundup on Articuler, which checked vendor pricing pages on October 23, 2026, lists its published price as Free.
What Signal by NFX Does Well
- It is free. NFX states it will never charge. On price, Signal beats Round Funded outright: Round Funded has no free tier, though its Data Room and several tools are free.
- Warm intro paths. The Gmail connection shows intro paths to investors, so you can see who in your own network can introduce you. Round Funded does not map your inbox for intro paths.
- Lists by stage, sector and region. They give a fast first cut. Articuler's October 2026 roundup counted 3,188 investors on Signal's seed-stage marketplaces list, updated October 21, 2026.
- Round-size hints. The "sweet spot" and range fields give a quick first read on round-size fit; Articuler describes the data as community-edited, so check a figure before you pitch.
Where Signal by NFX Falls Short
- Recency is not visible. On the list page Articuler reviewed in October 2026, no entry had a last-investment date: "You can see an investor's sweet spot, but not whether they wrote a check in the past two months."
- Outreach stops at the intro. In the 2017 Product Hunt thread, a reply in the Signal team's voice said: "you can't email investors through Signal. You still have to get a warm intro." Articuler's October 2026 review labels Signal's fundraising tracking "Basic tracking, not a full outreach workflow."
- It needs a network. Stork lists as a con that intro strength is "highly dependent on the user's existing Gmail network," and CherryPitch, a competing tool, argues that "Signal only works if you already have the network." With few venture contacts, expect fewer intro paths.
- Big lists. Articuler counted 5,778 investors on one SaaS seed list in October 2026, so a founder still has to sort them.

You can also use both: Signal for warm paths, Round Funded for the rest of your list.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Signal NFX cost?
Nothing. Signal by NFX's FAQ says it is "a 100% free tool from NFX" and that NFX will never charge for it, and Causo (May 2026) and Articuler (October 2026) both list it as free. Round Funded, which adds outreach from your own Gmail, starts at $99 a month on Round+.
Does Signal by NFX have a free plan or a free trial?
The entire product is free, so there is no trial period and no upgrade path. The warm-intro feature works through a Gmail connection. For comparison, Round Funded has no free tier, only a 3-day free trial on Round+ and Round Pro for first-time accounts, card required.
Is Signal NFX legit and worth it?
Yes, on the evidence we reviewed. The Geeks Club (October 2026) reports it is made by NFX Guild Labs, the software arm of NFX Guild, and Signal's FAQ says its security is aligned with SOC2 standards and that it is a Google API verified application. Articuler calls it "a free, useful starting point" that no founder should skip, while noting it cannot tell you which investors wrote a check last month.
Is Signal NFX a CRM?
Lightly. NFX's July 2019 post is titled "Signal - The Fundraising CRM for Startup Founders," and the FAQ says it helps you track your fundraising process. Articuler labels the tracking "Basic tracking, not a full outreach workflow." For a pipeline with outreach built in, see Round Funded's fundraising CRM tool.
Can you contact investors directly through Signal NFX?
Not from inside Signal. In the 2017 Product Hunt thread, a reply in the Signal team's voice said "you can't email investors through Signal" and that founders still have to get a warm intro. None of the pages we reviewed lists an email-sending feature. Round Funded sends AI-drafted emails from your own Gmail instead.
What are the best Signal NFX alternatives?
Round Funded for finding, emailing and tracking active investors; OpenVC for a free directory with a $99/month Premium tier (May 2026 pricing); Visible Connect for another free VC database; and Foundersuite for a database plus CRM. PitchBook and Dealroom suit deeper research. Our investor database roundup compares more.
Is Round Funded affiliated with Signal by NFX?
No. Round Funded is not affiliated with Signal by NFX or with NFX, the venture firm behind it. This independent comparison draws on Signal's own FAQ and homepage, third-party reviews and a 2017 Product Hunt thread, with facts as of October 2026.
Final Word
Signal by NFX is a good free place to build a first investor long list and find out who can introduce you. It stops at the intro. When you need active investors and a way to email them from your own Gmail, use Round Funded.
