In mid 2023 Anton Osika put a project called GPT Engineer on GitHub. It was open source, it was free, and it let you describe software and watch it get built. It went straight to the top of GitHub and collected tens of thousands of stars.
He and Fabian Hedin turned it into Lovable and launched the product in late 2024. No Bay Area move, no US incorporation story, no warm intro chain. The proof was already public: people were using the thing every day and telling each other about it.

Twenty-two months separate a pre-seed in Stockholm from a $13.3 billion valuation, and nobody involved needed to be in California. Growth came at the same pace: Lovable says it passed $100M of annualised revenue about eight months after launch, and was nearing eight million users by late 2025. Those are the company's own numbers rather than audited accounts, so treat them as a direction rather than a certificate. The funding is independently reported, and it moved just as fast.
