What UPchieve does

UPchieve is an edtech nonprofit that provides free, 24/7 online tutoring to low-income HS students. Using our app, students can request and get paired with a live volunteer in under 5 minutes. We’ve matched 100,000+ requests so far. Right now in the US, there are 8 million low-income HS students who don’t have anyone in their home who can help them with schoolwork. UPchieve is working to change that. Our vision is simple: we want to democratize access to academic support, so that every student has an equal opportunity to attend college and achieve upward mobility.

What is your company going to make? Please describe your product and what it does or will do.

We built an app that connects low-income high school students with live volunteer tutors on demand. Students can request help anytime, and within five minutes they get paired with a volunteer who assists them with specific academic questions or test prep topics.

Where do you live now, and where would the company be based after YC?

We live mostly in New York City but work remotely. After YC, we would be based in New York, NY, with remote operations.

Explain your decision regarding location.

New York is where we started and where most of our team is based. It also has a huge population of students who need free tutoring. Remote work lets us tap volunteers nationwide to cover 24/7 demand.
