The effects of fossil-fuel use are degrading the ocean and destroying the planet. It’s time for modern wind power. Outsail has brought a groundbreaking technology from satellites, the tape spring, to earth. Our fully autonomous, retractable wingsail allows vessels to access more wind power than ever before by providing both the aerodynamic efficiency of a wing and the perfect amount of area for the wind strength. OutSail is backed by Y Combinator (W23), and founded by two engineers and an aerodynamics PhD who have led teams, managed products, and designed hardware for Momentus, Nuro, AEye, Tesla and SpaceX.

We build fully autonomous, retractable wingsails based on aerospace tape spring technology. Our product attaches to vessels and optimizes wind power use, enabling unlimited-range wind-powered shipping. It combines wing-like efficiency and adaptable sail area for more reliable and cleaner propulsion than combustion engines.

Where do you live now, and where would the company be based after YC?

We live in Mountain View, CA, and the company is based here.

Explain your decision regarding location.

We are located in Mountain View because it gives us access to aerospace and hardware talent, and a strong tech ecosystem needed to develop our advanced wingsail system.
