He finished his undergraduate studies at Amherst College with honors in Chemistry and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1974. He completed his surgical training in 1980 at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City and Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He did research fellowships at Boston University School of Medicine and the Naval Medical Research Institute.
