1.2B lbs of fish are caught everyday yet as little as 1 in 3 fish make it to a plate - most of this waste arises because fish are suffocated on boats or electrocuted on farms. Suffocation and inaccurate electrocution create stress and so acidify meat, damage quality and significantly reduce shelf-life. Artisanal techniques in high-end sushi multiply shelf-life and taste but, because of the variation in fish, are difficult to perform in a mechanical fashion. Shinkei automates traditional techniques using robotics to provide long-lasting and delicious fish for farmers and harvesters at scale.

What is your company going to make? Please describe your product and what it does or will do.

We build robotic systems that automate traditional artisanal techniques used in high-end sushi preparation, but at scale. Our robots treat fish immediately after harvest on boats or farms to reduce stress, prevent suffocation and inaccurate electrocution, which acidify the meat and reduce shelf life. The result is better-tasting fish that lasts longer and can be delivered fresh to consumers.

Where do you live now, and where would the company be based after YC?

We live and work in Los Angeles, CA, and the company will remain based here after YC.

Explain your decision regarding location.

Los Angeles has a strong talent pool in hardware and robotics, and it's also close to major seafood markets where we test and deploy. Staying here keeps us close to our early customers and manufacturing partners.
