We realized that S3 is kind of like "git for data" and have created services that make S3 function as a data hub for teams. Quilt consists of a Python Client, a web catalog for browsing and visualizing S3, and a CloudFormation backend for compute and identity management.

What is your company going to make? Please describe your product and what it does or will do.

We built Quilt to make S3 work like git for data. Our product includes a Python client for managing data versions, a web catalog for browsing and visualizing data sets stored on S3, and a CloudFormation backend that handles compute and identity management. This lets engineering and product teams treat datasets like code, collaborating on data and running experiments faster without wrangling raw S3 files.

Where do you live now, and where would the company be based after YC?

We live in San Francisco and operate remotely. After YC, the company will remain based in San Francisco but retain a remote-friendly team structure.

Explain your decision regarding location.

San Francisco gives us access to engineers and early users building data products. Remote work lets us hire talent beyond the city while maintaining presence in the tech hub where our customers are.
